Day 1: Kick-off

By Jeroen - Posted on 10 July 2011

The last match of the first day is almost finished so it's time to recapulate what happend today. First of all I have to admit to be quite surprised but also glad that 5 of our 9 Belgian participants won their first round match and continue their run in the qualifying tournament. Especialy the win of Elyne Boeykens was impressive, with good tennis, a high percentage game she cruised through her match. At the same time local girl Lize Leenknecht fought and won her match, although she made quite some faults, she kept her concentration high and with a good fighting spirit she passed her first round. In the all-Belgian first round it was quite on-way tennis and Michaela Boev won without spending too much energy.

In mine point of vue, the best match of the day was that one between 14th seed Cecilia Costa Melgar of Chili and Zalina Khairudinova of Kazachstan. Both girls played a high quality tennis throughout the first set, showing the numerous viewers some good clay court tennis with loung rallies and litlle mistakes. In the tiebreak of the first set both girls fought for every point but it was Cecilia who took the set with 8-6 in the tiebreak. In the second set she kept playing at a high level. Her opponent started to make some more mistakes which resulted in one break which was sufficient to close to match, 6-3.

Tomorrow anounces to be a good day, the weather is on our side but there are also some very interesting matches programmed. Not only ther is the all-Belgian second round between Elyne Boeykens and Steffi Distelmans but eight highest seeds will start their run in the tournament.

At 12 o'clock is the deadline for the sign-inn for the doubles tournament. So far 12 teams entered which means only 4 spots are open for other interested players, I can't publish the names yet but there are some good teams on the list! The first matches of the day are programmed at 9.30 so it's going to be early day!
